Mixing with Mitch

On the way up to a string of shows up the East coast last week, I had a 48hr brush with jangle pop. I stopped to mix my new record at Fidelitorium, which also happens to be fairly close to my home here in the holler.

Mixing is where we take the initial recording tracks, arrange them neatly and beat them into submission. This is my favorite stage of the game. Usually I mix all the tracks myself but for for this material, I bit the bullet and paid for studio time with Fidelitorium’s owner/operator, Mitch Easter. Mitch is best known for having produced REM’s breakthrough records from ’81 – ’84. He’s worked with so many greats – The dB’s, Big Star, Pavement, Drive-By Truckers, Alejandro Escovedo, Let’s Active…

He has a lot of great stories, and I took as many notes as I could but I was there to roll the dice and see what vetted ears like his, these songs and a modern studio could do. I’m really happy with the results. The tracks are alive. They lurk in the corners of the room and whisper over your shoulder. It’s hard to explain but hopefully you’ll hear it too when the record comes out.

I’m still looking at an early ’19 DIY release. If any of you know anyone in the business that might want to work with me on getting this out, contact me here or email drunkenprayer @ gmail

Let’s sorghum the walls and commence to shootin’ flies…
