Asheville, NC @ Fleetwoods with Harvey McLaughlin (TX)
Fleetwood's, 496 Haywood Rd, Asheville, NC 28806, USA
Harvey: "I want to play the piano the way Link Wray plays the guitar"
Spinning tall tales of folklore, myth, urban legend and conspiracy theory through the kaleidoscope eye of soul, rock & roll and pre-war r&B, Harvey McLaughlin’s piano playing (and guitar slinging) antics have been ever present in the San Antonio music scene for the better part of the last twenty years. Be it in the dark instrumental horror surf outfit, the Sandworms (2008-2015); the jump blues psychobilly extravaganza of the Hares (2012-2016); or, more recently, joining the legendary Austin/SA cowpunk ensemble, the Hickoids – McLaughlin’s raucous style and swagger spreads wide.

1st 100 get a free promotional church fanThy Burdens is a natural evolution of the Drunken Prayer catalog. The album is an homage to the fiery, sublime music of the church that means so much to the musicians who worked on it. Musically it’s hard country-soul with horns, shouting and a lot of groove. The songs vary between the evergreen and the obscure. Represented here are tributes across the landscape: Thomas Dorsey, Martha Carson, Snooks Eaglin, Ralph Stanley, The Zion Travelers, Leon Payne, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Hank Williams, Odetta, Dylan, and traditionals that are too old to credit.
The project was spearheaded by Drive-By Truckers’ bassist Bobby Matt Patton who cut his teeth playing in fiery Pentecostal church bands around north Alabama, and Morgan Geer (Drunken Prayer) who learned a lot of the hymns they recorded from his great grandmother and father in Mobile, AL.
“People need to hear the gospel of Jesus now more than ever. If it’s being left to folks like us to spread it, something has gone wrong.”

TrimTab Brewing - Birmingham, AL
TrimTab Brewing Company, 2721 5th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233, USA
“Something hit me very hard once, thinking about what one little man could do. Think of the Queen Elizabeth again: The whole ship goes by and then comes the rudder. And there’s a tiny thing on the edge of the rudder called a trim tab. It’s a miniature rudder. Just moving that little trim tab builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder around. It takes almost no effort at all. So I said that the individual can be a trim tab. Society thinks it’s going right by you, that it’s left you altogether. But if you’re doing dynamic things mentally, the fact is that you can just put your foot out like that and the whole ship of state is going to turn around.
So I said, ‘Call me Trim Tab.’“
